Description
Summary:The Palestinian public opinion is largely influenced by the media discourse which is linked to the political context of the country. This may be due to the nature of the media environment in Palestine where most of the media organizations are under the control of political parties. This study will look into the dependency of the Palestinian Youth towards two of the prominent TV channels namely Al-Aqṣa and Palestine TV’s channels and the role of the channels in shaping the Palestinian national identity. This study adopts survey as the main instrument to collect data. It targets university students in the major Palestinian universities in West Bank and Ghaza Strip. 750 respondents were randomly selected. This study also interviewed a number of media workers in both channels as well as academics, and media experts. Arabic reference books, periodicals, articles and reports, researches and previous studies were also referred to. The findings show that Al-Aqṣa TV obtained a higher dependency level of youth more than Palestine TV, besides that the political and financial factors play an important role in determining the daily media coverage of both channels. This also means both Al-Aqṣa and Palestine TV have a varying role in representing the elements of the Palestinian national identity. In addition, this study argues that both channels play a negative role in shaping the Palestinian unified national identity due to inconsistencies of the media policies with the aspiration of Palestinian national identity in general.
