Summary: | The study aims at exploring the competencies for children in emulating the value of voluntarism in the light of the Quran and the Prophet’s Sunnah. Awareness about such competencies seem low among children despite its importance in the formation of a positive Muslim personality. There is also a lack of education guidelines to promote the value of volunteerism among children. This is important because it could connect children to high moral values such as altruism, intercession, charity, etc. To illustrate the solid relationship between volunteerism and educational competences (skills), this study was designed to bridge this gap in both: concept and behavior. Despite of the existence of vast knowledge, the technological advances, and the multitude of opportunities that can be invested in advocating volunteerism in all spheres of life, these elements have not been used in a best manner to encourage children to implement them in their worship, relationships with society and the environment. Following the inductive method, the researcher explored published studies which confirmed the poor awareness of volunteerism concept among children. The study also adopted an analytical method to explore and extract the educational competencies from the relevant Quranic verses which mentioned volunteerism and from the Prophetic hadith. The content of these two sources champions volunteerism in all spheres of life. The most prominent results of this study are volunteerism can have a negative aspect which is rejected. The positive aspect is preferable. There is a disparity between volunteerism and philanthropy. Thus, this study comes up with a new definition of volunteerism which promotes wellbeing. The study also drew up several important educational skills, which are among the priorities of modern education goals for youngsters: cognitive, emotional, and competencies which contribute strongly to preservation of children’s faith identity, develop personal competence, and keep the nation’s civilized legacy. This study is a step towards guiding educators to adopt the concept of volunteerism as a cumulative pedagogical approach in guiding children’s competences to develop a noble Muslim personality. Volunteering is a necessity rather than a luxury for sustainable development. |
