Summary: | Since the advent of Islam in the Nusantara in the 11th century, there has been a wide circulation of scientific, astronomical, and medicinal knowledge among scholars of the region. These were compiled in a collection of works known as “the Malay manuscripts”. More specifically thousands of Malay medicinal manuscripts were found containing thousands of remedial prescriptions to cure various physical illnesses and ailments of the body. The synthesis of Arabic, Ayurvedic, and Chinese influences in Malay traditional medicine testifies to Southeast Asia’s strategic position as a meeting point of people, culture, and knowledge, which has given birth to a unique system of medical knowledge molded by various cultures in contact through religion, trade, and migration. In the case of the Bottom Billion today, where the poorest communities are impoverished, this study conducted systematic review of Malay medicinal manuscript Kitab Tib MSS 3290 to delineate healing properties of natural ingredients out-coming from Malay local wisdom for one of the common illnesses of the Bottom Billion – namely gastroenteritis. This is relevant due to its paralleling climate of the flora and fauna rooted in both Malay world with the Bottom Billion in the Indian Subcontinent and Africa. Methods used systematic strategy in identifying and locating the manuscript using catalogues of Malay manuscripts. Extraction of prescriptions were then transliterated and translated, with each ingredient identified and used in the systematic review process via scientific articles and systematic reviews. The aim is to identify healing properties of these herbal ingredients found in the manuscript. This would then be useful to understand the mechanism of these traditional remedies in a scientific lens. This thesis therefor, is an analysis of more than a hundred scientific experiments that evaluated the efficacy of herbal-based remedies found in Kitab Tibb MSS 3290. Results have shown that these scientific studies indeed prove the medicinal potential of the herbs and spices prescribed in the Kitab Tibb, thus showing a strong corroboration between knowledge of science and Malay traditional medicine. This opens a new pathway for examining Malay manuscripts through a scientific lens, which goes far beyond the usual philosophical, codicological, and socio-historical analysis in existing studies. The results of this research can have social relevance by suggesting affordable and accessible medicinal solutions particularly for the Bottom Billion |
