description This study aims to analyze the level of Malay bachelor degree students' ability in Negara Brunei Darussalam while applying gender in their writing skill and also to examine the language errors at the Syntax and Morphology levels caused by the intralingual and development errors when using Arabic gender as their second language. The problems arising when the privileges of detail gender classification associated with nominal formulas such as names, pronouns, and adjectives, that containing sign or evidence, are divided into original and figurative, while feminine gender is divided into signing and meanings, which causes students hard to distinguish between original and figurative feminine and also how to use it. This study uses a descriptive analysis approach collected through a written test on (139) sample students at Sultan Sharif Ali Al-Islamiyyah University to analyze the types of errors made by the students such as; name, adjective, gender’s type, verb, noun, number, and conversion process and explain the reasons for that errors. By using quantitative and qualitative analysis, the findings show that the level of students’ ability is at the initial level and the percentage of morphological errors is (68%), more than the syntax errors. In the morphological errors, the percentage of errors in determining the type of gender is (77%), more often than the errors in the feminine sign’s reduction and addition in forming words. While in syntactic errors, the percentage of unsuitable gender between the numbers is (67%), more frequent than others, such as unsuitable gender between verb and adverb and between noun and pronoun. The percentage errors in classifying nouns as masculine and feminine is (35%), and translating adjectives is (22%), both were moderate. The study reveals that not knowing the methods and lack of practices have a low quality that leads to the incompleteness of meaning in the formation of word, and unsuitable gender in sentences. Indeed students have had difficulty in applying gender in writing due to the lack of vocabulary and forgetting the method, although the method has been studied and understood. This study presents the solutions and suggestions appropriate to address existing problems, such as: it is necessary to examine linguistic errors because the difficulty faced by Arabic language learners shows the true fact that might be faced by others whom study Arabic as a second language, also lecturers need to master the skills required in the teaching processes. All of these are intended to enhance and further develop the student's level of ability and thus reduce the linguistic errors that occur in writing skill.
