Description
Summary:This study aimed to reveal health attitudes and behaviours among students of basic education in the Sultanate of Oman as an aspect of health education in the science curriculum, creating a relationship between health trends and behaviours of students, and building health education standards that can be used to develop science curriculum in basic education in the Sultanate of Oman in order to enhance students' attitudes and health behaviours. Thud, to achieve the study goals, a descriptive approach was used. The study sample included (720) male and female students from Grade 10 students of basic education in Al Dakhiliya Governorate, Sultanate of Oman, who were randomly chosen. A health behaviours scale was prepared that included (40) items divided in four areas: personal health, nutritional, preventive and environmental behaviours. A measure of health trends was prepared, which included (32) items, also divided over four areas: the trends towards personal, food, preventive and environmental health. Two measures have been confirmed as credible by presenting them to a group of arbitrators specialized in the educational and health fields. The stability of the two measures was calculated using the Alpha Cronbach equation, as it reached (0.84). Also, by re-applying the same sample by a difference of two weeks, the correlation coefficient between the two applications for the two measures as a whole was (0.7), which is a very strong relationship that is sufficient for the purposes of the study. The researcher analysed the data using the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences program (SPSS). The study concluded the following results: The level of attitudes towards health as a whole among students is high on the overall scale, and on all sub-domains as well as the emergence of positive and negative trends in students towards health. There are statistically significant differences in the level of personal, preventive and environmental health trends in favour of females, and in favour of students who are the city's residents, and the absence of differences in the level of healthy food trends attributable to two variables: gender and residential environment. The results also showed that the level of healthy behaviours as a whole among students is high on the overall level of the scale, and on all sub-domains, except for behaviours related to food health. There is also emergence of positive and negative health behaviours among students, and the presence of statistically significant differences attributable to the gender variable in the level of personal, preventive and environmental health behaviours, for the benefit of females, and for the level of nutritional health behaviours in favour of males. Furthermore, there is presence of statistically significant differences due to the residential environment variable in the level of preventive and environmental health behaviors and the absence of differences in the level of personal and nutritional health behaviors. Moreover, there is presence of a weak positive relationship between the dimensions of health trends among students as an independent variable, and between personal, nutritional, preventive and environmental health behaviours as dependent variables. Therefore, the study came out with a document of proposed standards for health education.
