Al Jazeera, known for its diverse media outlets and coverage of global issues,
particularly in the Middle East, holds significant influence in shaping audience
perspectives. However, a comprehensive examination of the extent and nature of these
variations is yet to be conducted, warranting further research in this. Therefore, the
researcher conducts a comparative study between Aljazeera English (AJE) and
Aljazeera Arabic (AJA) news websites in framing the Great March of Return (GMR)
as Palestinian nonviolent resistance in the context of Palestinian Israeli conflict. The
qualitative content analysis, specifically textual analysis is employed in this study to
examine how the GMR issue is portrayed on both the AJA and AJE news websites, to
identify how both news sites frame the GMR issue, and to delve into the themes and
topics addressed in their news coverage. As well as to find out the differences and
similarities between AJA and AJE in GMR news coverage. There are 137 news articles
collected from both sites through purposive sampling method for one-year period from
30th March 2018 until 30th March 2019. Based on news framing theory used for this
study, there are some of the generic frames found; “violent, human-interest,
responsibility, political, and ethical frames” show similarities and differences in the
studied articles. Meanwhile, the specific frames of GMR are used differently in AJA
and AJE coverage. In terms of news depiction for actors, AJA and AJE are in line in
presenting Palestinians as nonviolent protestors, victims, and demanding their rights.
However, both differ in portraying the Israeli side. AJA presents them as colonizer and
criminal, while AJE uses the term ‘self-defence’ to describe their actions. For themes
and topics raised in the news coverage, there are five issues discussed in GMR mainly
Gaza siege, war crimes, historical context, stories of victims and slogans of protests. |
