Summary: | The university education is considered to be a qualitatively and quantitatively shift for
students. It requires the university student to possess a set of moral values, the ability
of self-regulation of behaviour, and selection appropriate of colleagues that will help
him raise the level of academic achievement and develop a sense of social responsibility
towards his society. Therefore, the study attempted to investigate the role of moral
values, self-regulation, and the peer group in academic achievement and social
responsibility among students at the University of Nizwa in the Sultanate of Oman. It
also sought to highlight the role of self-efficacy in mediating between moral values,
self-regulation, and the peer group on the one hand, and academic achievement and
social responsibility on the other hand. Hence, the study used quantitative approach and
a sample to 365 students were randomly selected from a population of 7219 used cluster
randomization method. The instrument used to collect the data was adopted from
previous studies and the validity and reliability of the instrument were tested via
experts’ comments and pilot study was conducted to examine the reliability of the scale.
The result of reliability through Cronbach’s alpha suggested that the instrument is
reliable and suitable for any academic exercises since the value of Cronbach’s alpha
ranged between 0.747 and 0.841. Structural Equation Modelling (SEM) was used to
examine the complex relationship among variables, and it was discovered that there is
a direct and statistically significant relationship between moral values on one hand and
social responsibility and academic achievement on the other hand. Moreover, there is
also a strong correlation between self-regulation and peer group on one hand and social
responsibility and academic achievement on the other hand. Interestingly, self-efficacy
was also found to play a significant role in mediating between moral value, selfregulation
and peer group on one hand and academic achievement and social
responsibility on the other hand. The study also found statistical differences between
the faculties. Hence, it was recommended that the attention should be paid to moral
values at the university level, training on self-regulation among university students, and
educating students about social responsibility. |
