Description
This study examined the level of self-determination and career aspiration among MPV students. Factors that predict self-determination and career aspiration in term of perception towards vocational subject and social support were also investigated. The sample comprised of n= 512 Form 4 students enrolled in vocational class at 34 national secondary schools in Penang. A mixed method research designed was employed for this study. The quantitative data were collected via questionnaire survey and analysed through the Statistical Package for Social Science (SPSS) version 20.0 and SMART-PLS. Specifically, descriptive test, t-test, Kruskal Wallis’s test, path analyses and regression statistics were carried out. Qualitative data, on the other hand, were gathered through semi-structured interviews and analysed through thematic analysis. The findings showed that significant differences did not exist in students’ self-determination (t=1.61,p<0.05), however students’ career aspiration (t=3.12, p<0.05) showed significant differences according to gender. Selfdetermination (X2 (2)= 21.452, p<0.05) and career aspiration (X2 (2)= 35.974, p<0.05) were also found to differ significantly by vocational fields.
