Description
Summary:The yearly statistics of workplace accident cases in Malaysia is worrying. Accidents at workplace affect the organization's reputation, budget, productivity, and employees’ commitments to continuously work with the organization. Previous studies have shown that self-control, employee's actions, and organizational environment highly influenced accidents at workplace, thus affect safety performance of the organization. Based on these factors, this study aims to look at psychological empowerment, employee engagement, safety climate and safety performance of the organization. This study is conducted to identify the impact of employees’ engagement and its dimensions on the relationships between safety climate and safety performance of the organization. The mediating factors of employee engagement and its dimensions that effect the relationships between psychological empowerment and safety performance were also investigated. Data were obtained through the distribution of the questionnaire which consist of Safety Climate Questionnaire (SCQ), Psychological Empowerment Questionnaire (PEQ), Utrecht Work Engagement Scale (UWES), and Safety Performance Scale (SPS). The data were obtained from 400 operator workers through questionnaires distributed at seven electrical and electronic manufacturing organizations in Perak. Relationships between variables were tested through Structural Equation Modelling (SEM) using Smart-PLS software version 3. The results show that the safety climate has a significant impact on safety performance. These findings also indicate that employee engagement and its dimensions have significantly mediated the relationship between safety climate and safety performance. In addition, the results of the study have confirmed that there is a significant relationship between psychological empowerment and safety performance. Based on the findings of the study, it is also found that employee engagement and its dimensions are significant mediators in the relationship between psychological empowerment and safety performance. The recommendations and limitations of the study are also stated for future research.
