Description
Summary:The current education system which is too examination -oriented to neglect the learning process of students has resulted in the enjoyment of students that should be gained through learning is reduced and in turn eliminates the motivation and motivation to learn. This scenario is of great concern to all parties. Therefore, this study was conducted to examine the level and relationship of interest in the subject of Mathematics and motivation to learn Mathematics of students in the district of Kluang, Johor. The study sample consisted of 188 Year 5 students selected from three urban schools and three rural schools using purposive sampling. The Cronbach's Alpha reliability value for the Mathematics interest instrument in this study was 0.93 while the Cronbach's Alpha reliability value for the Mathematics motivation instrument in this study was 0.94. The collected data were analyzed through descriptive statistical analysis and also inferential statistical analysis using Statistical Packages for Social Sciences Version 20 (SPSS). The results of the study showed that the level of students' interest in the subject of Mathematics was at a high level (M= 3.82, N= 188). Findings of the study showed that students' motivation to learn Mathematics was at a high level (M= 3.69, N= 188) where intrinsic motivation (M= 3.72, N= 188) and extrinsic motivation (M= 3.66, N = 188). There was no significant difference in the level of motivation between male and female students. Spearman’s correlation analysis showed that there was a strong and significant positive relationship between interest in the subject of Mathematics and students ’motivation to learn Mathematics (r= 0.814, p= 0.00). Therefore, it can be concluded that if students' interest in the subject of Mathematics is high, then the motivation to learn Mathematics will also be in a high state. This study also has implications for various parties, especially to students, teachers, schools, the Ministry of Education Malaysia and future researchers to find out the level of interest and motivation to learn Mathematics in the latest schools.
