Description
Summary:Statistical education has grown rapidly along with the awareness of the importance of education in the modern era. The importance and role of statistics in daily life has also begun to be realized by various parties. However, most postgraduate students have negative attitudes and poor conceptions towards statistics. Furthermore, there are no formal studies conducted at Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) on the attitudes and conceptions of postgraduate students towards statistics. Therefore, this study aims to identify the attitudes and conceptions of postgraduate students towards statistics. In addition, the relationship between the attitudes and conceptions of postgraduate students towards statistics can also be known in this study. A total of 51 people from 101 postgraduate students enrolled statistic courses in semester 1 session 2020/2021 at School of Education, UTM have been a sample of this study. The instruments used in this study are questionnaires that have three parts and distributed during the 6th week by online. The findings show that postgraduate students have positive attitudes towards statistics but low conceptions of statistics. Researchers have also found that there is no significant relationship between attitudes and conceptions of postgraduate students towards statistics. Besides that, lecturers can also give more attention on sampling, scale measurement, probability and measure of central tendency as most students have an understanding of these topics. In conclusion, it is hoped that this study can make postgraduate students form a correct conception towards statistics and make statistics as one of the easiest courses.
