Summary:The purpose of this study is to identify the effect of stress management as moderator in the relationship between competitive working environment and work performance among Universiti Teknologi Malaysia academic staff. The respondents consist of 302 UTM academic staff who are placed in each of the faculty at UTM, Johor Bahru. The data is collected by using a set of questionnaire which consists of four parts namely part A (Demography), part B (Competitive Working Environment), part C (Stress Management) and part D (Work Performance). Then, the collected data have been analyzed by using descriptive statistic (mean and percentage) and inferential statistic (multiple regression and hierarchical regression). The finding reveals that the level of competitive working environment among UTM academic staff is at moderate level while the level of stress management and work performance are at high level. In addition, competition for reward is competitive working environment dimension that most affect work performance. The finding also reveals that stress management is found only as a predictor and not as a moderator on the relationship between competitive working environment and work performance. In this study, some suggestions have been given to future researchers and also UTM
