Summary: | This study explores the role of religious motivation in adult learning specifically in Self-Directed Learning (SDL) from an Islamic perspective. Research objectives are to identify the concept of religious motivation, explore its method of development, its role in SDL and to produce a grounded theory related to the role of religious motivation in SDL and adult learning. The research is qualitative case study with in-depth interviews and grounded theory, assisted by NVivo software version 10. Interviews were conducted on ten adult Muslims who had pursued a doctoral degree at a research university in Malaysia. In addition, interviews were also conducted on a group of expert in adult learning, and religion and learning from a religious perspective which includes a professor with vast experience in the affairs of learning at the doctoral degree level. Content analysis of relevant documents was also conducted. This includes Ph.D. experiences sharing books such as Seteguh Tekad, PhD: Kecil Tapi Signifikan and Kenangan Sepanjang Jalan. A grounded theory was built inclusive with the concept of religious motivation, which consist aspects of faith, religious intention and purpose as well as determination. Religious motivation is also represented by the term Divine Motivation, with the equation of MI (Divine Motivation) = I (Faith) x N (Religious intention and purpose) x K (Determination). MI produces Divine Learning as the construction of MI occurs through Divine Metacognitive, which involves intention and desire, cognitive understanding and spiritual practices in order to produce strong soul. This study also suggests improvements in Garrison SDL model to include elements of „Divine Metacognitive? and „family? |
