Description
Summary:The Klang River is a well-known polluted river in the State of Selangor and in Malaysia. The Klang River is categorized as a polluted river and has been classified as Class IV and Class V since 1976. Pollution that occurs on the Klang River is often the cause of health and well-being problems such as chemical pollution, garbage disposal and flash floods. To ensure that these disasters does not lengthen, the Selangor State Government planned a project initiative that plays the role of conserving and developing the Klang River, which is known as Selangor Maritime Gateway. Therefore, this study is carried out to identify the steps taken to overcome the pollution of the Klang River by assessing the activities implemented and planned in the Selangor Maritime Gateway. Two (2) objectives of the study have been outlined, the first is to identify the causes of river pollution, whilst the second objective is to identify the measures implemented in Selangor Maritime Gateway to overcome the problem of river pollution. Primary data collection was obtained through an interview method with five (5) respondents consisting of officers from the Selangor State Secretary's Office, Klang Municipal Council, Selangor Irrigation and Drainage Department, Selangor Water Management Board and Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs). The data analyzed descriptively are presented in the form of tables and descriptions. Briefly, the results of the study obtained identifies that the Selangor Maritime Gateway is possible to overcome the pollution of the Klang River through measures that can ensure continuous recovery and sustainability of the river namely through the use of equipment control instruments, control through legislation, control of pollution pathways, control through education, the role of society and control through the economy. These measures can be improved with more supportive efforts from the Government and other stakeholders. Based on these findings, several suggestions have been obtained and it is hoped that this study can provide useful input to all in ensuring the environmental sustainability can be maintained holistically.
