Description
Summary:Matang Mangrove Forest Reserve (MMFR) of Perak, Malaysia is a mangrove forest which grows naturally above sea level, bordering the Straits of Malacca and the shaped crescent moon, stretching 51.5 km from Kuala Gula, Mukim Selingsing, Tanjung Piandang, Bagan Tiang and Kuala Kurau District Kerian to the north to Bagan Panchor, Mukim Sungai Tinggi, Trong and Matang District of Larut Matang and Selama districts in the south. MMFR plays an important role in economic related interest such as production of timber and charcoal. It is also plays a role in the socioeconomic sector, nature tourism, fisheries, food and medicine as well as the research and education and stability of the ecosystem itself. Nowadays, information on the production of mangrove wood is not properly recorded. Hence, revisions on the production of mangrove wood with what has been planned under the Forest Work Plan issued have never been formally made by knowing what factors affect the trend of mangrove production. Primary data such mangrove logging licence record data and GIS data are the main data in this study. The characteristics of the production area will be analyzed to reflect the trends of mangrove production and management and environmental factors which also contribute to the trend of mangrove timber. It is hoped that this study will be used for planning and management in optimising the production of mangrove timber in Malaysia and the Matang Mangrove Forest Reserve (MMFR) of Perak based on sustainable forest management.
