Description
Summary:In this modern era, transportation is extremely important in people’s lives. This is because to travel from one place to another, near or far, transportation is an important factor. In addition , getting goods from producers is very dependent on transportation. Indonesia as a maritime country, consist of approximately 13,000 islands, therefore sea transportation plays a very important role. But in fact there is so many national shipping companies which establish many years ago had been bankrupt. Because of the advance technology in the field of shipping, there are many types of ships which have been built and are being used today. For the above reasons it should be analyzed more seriously exactly what kind of ships are needed to operate in the future in Indonesia’s domestic routes. Currently the shipping lines mostly operate conventional ships with average low output in loading/unloading cargo which causes a very long turn round time in port and, of course, increases ship’s port costs. In this context it is important to find alternative type of ship which can decrease those port costs. For the above reasons, there will be a further search for more efficient type of ship to compare with the kind of ship which is currently being used by the shipping lines today. This research utilized a “qualitative” method by conducting Time and Motion Study. The research was carried out at two parts, RoRo vessels at Merak port and Conventional vessels a Tanjung Priok port. The result indicates that RoRo vessels are more efficient in time in their loading and unloading operations compared to conventional vessels.
