Description
Summary:The purpose of this qualitative and quantitative studies are to identify the leadership styles of the secondary school principals and their levels of practice in managerial behavior; the levels of teachers’ professional -organizational commitment and their effects on students’ academic achievements. Research questions were developed to determined the relationship between these four variables. The leadership styles of each principal was assessed by the Leader Behavior Description Questionnaire, Form XII (LBDQ). The levels of managerial behavior were measured using a set of questionnaire developed, based on the ideas of Nickson ( 1990 ). The levels of teachers’ commitment was determined by using the 'Overall Commitment Scale' by Yusuff bin Hj. Hanifah (1981). The academic achievement of the school was based on the results of Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) and Penilaian Menengah Rendah (PMR) for the year 1994. A random sampling of 357 teachers were selected from secondary schools in urban areas of the Hilir Perak District. The data obtained were analyzed using descriptive statistics. Research findings indicate that the Principals’ were perceived by the teachers as having a high initiating structure and consideration leadership style (Style 1). They were also perceived to carry out management functions which includes planning, supervising, leading and controlling. Although the teachers showed high teaching commitment, 26.9% of them expressed their intention of leaving the profession in the coming ten years. From the statistical analysis conducted, there seem to be a significant correlation between the Principals’ leadership style, their management behavior, teachers’ commitment and students academic achievement. Findings indicate significant relationship between variables investigated. It is recommended that the existing and future Principals be exposed to the importance of implementing suitable leadership style and managerial behavior in their respective schools. It is further recommended that the standard of teaching profession in Malaysia be upgraded to make the profession more attractive.
