Description
Summary:The purpose of this research is to study the relationship between the principal’s leadership behavior and job satisfaction among teachers. This study adopted the Path Goal Theory by House (1974) to study the leadership behavior and Maslow Need Theory (1954) to study job satisfaction. The studied leadership behaviors are directive, supportive, participative and achievement- oriented, while job satisfaction refers to physiological need, security, social need, self-esteem and self-actualization. This research involved 254 respondents from eight A secondary schools in Kubang Pasu district. Questionaires containing 35 question on leadership behavior and 50 question on job satisfaction were distributed. The data obtained was analysed using the descriptive statistical method to determine the frequency, percentage, mean and standard deviation and the inference statistical method which includes t-test, one-way Anova and Pearson correlation. The findings show that the most dominant leadership behavior is achievement-oriented, while directive behavior is the least practised by the principals. Besides that, the findings also reveal that there is a significant difference on analysis made by man and woman teachers regarding supportive leadership behavior of the principal. In addition, it is also found that the analysis made by graduate and non-graduate teachers on directive, supportive and achievement-oriented leadership is different. As from the aspect of teaching experience, it is found that there is a significant difference in the principal’s leadership behavior based on the teacher’s teaching experience. The findings on job satisfaction reveal that the satisfaction on physiological need is higher while the other needs in Maslow Theory are moderate. Besides that, there is no significant difference on job satisfaction based on gender. Job satisfaction based on the category of service is significant in the aspect of physiological need. The findings also show that physiological need, security and self-esteem vary according to teachers’ teaching experiences. Finally, the research also suggests that there is a correlation between the principal’s leadership behavior and job satisfaction among teachers.
