Description
Summary:The aim of this study was to identify the relationship between principal leadership behavior and the level of role stress among secondary school teachers in Kapit district, Sarawak. A total of 153 teachers were randomly selected as respondents. Cross-sectional survey method was used in this study. Data were gathered using questionnaires. The instruments used in this study were Leader Behavior Description Questionnaire (LBDQ) that was developed by Halpin (1966) to measure the principal leadership behavior. Meanwhile, teacher role stress questionnaire that was used by Conley and Woosley (1999) to measure the level of role stress amongst teachers. The data were analyzed using the Statistical Package of Social Sciences (SPSS) Version 12.0 for Windows. There were 31 teachers involved in the pilot study that have been made and the alpha Cronbach reliability value of 0.84 was obtained for initiating structure dimension and 0.85 for consideration dimension of leadership behavior. Meanwhile, for teacher role stress instrument, the alpha Cronbach reliability value of 0.89 was obtained. Therefore, both instruments that have been used in this study were having a high reliability to be used. The results of the study indicated that the level of role stress among the secondary school teachers in Kapit district were moderate (mean = 2.72, s.d = 0.85). The principal in Kapit district more on initiating structure dimension (mean = 3.62, s.d = 0.51) compared to consideration dimension (mean = 3.44, s.d = 0.72) of leadership behavior. Beside that, the result also indicated that there was a significant difference in respect to demographic such as gender and teaching experience but there was no significant difference in respect to demographic such as service group and marital status. There was a weak significant relationship between both dimension of leadership behavior which is initiating structure dimension (r = -0.25) and consideration dimension (r = -0.40) but in negative associated. Overall, There was a weak significant (r = -0.38) relationship between leadership behavior and the level of role stress among the secondary school teachers in Kapit district but in negative relationship
