Description
Summary:The aim of this research is to study the relationship between value orientation and choice of career among the urban and rural adolescents. A total of 126 adolescents from the districts of Alor Setar, Pendang and Padang Terap, Kedah Darul Aman were selected as sample. The Value Orientation Theory of Kluckhohn and Strodtbeck (1961) and the Choice of Career Theory of Ginzberg (1951) were used as the basis for the construction of the two measuring instruments used in the research, i.e. Skill Variation in Value Orientation and Rothwell-Miller Interest Blank. The data collected were analysed in descriptive and inferential terms. The result of this study shows that there is a significant positive relationship between value orientation and choice of career especially in terms of ethnicity and place of origin of the respondent. From the ethnicity point of view, it was found that the Malay adolescent who falls under being variation, lineal, present and domineering variation had a significantly positive tendency choose career involving calculation. Whereas the Chinese adolescent who falls under lineal variation, past, domineering and harmony variation had a significantly positive tendency to choose a career in the Arts. The Indian adolescent who falls under being variation, lineal and domineering variation had a significantly positive tendency to choose a career which is both mechanical and practical in nature. From the place of origin point of view, the urban adolescent who falls under lineal and past variation had a significantly positive tendency to choose a clerical career. Whereas the rural adolescent who falls under lineal, collateral, future, present and domineering variation had a significantly positive tendency to choose a practical career. Hence it was concluded that independent variables i.e. respondent’s ethnicity and place of origin have a definite effect on the relationship between value orientation and choice of career among the urban and rural adolescents.
