Summary: | Percutaneous Injury due to needle stick is a normal phenomenon among Health Care Workers (HCWs) and Health Students. This can cause transmission of blood borne pathogen from patients to Health Care Workers (HCWs) and Health students and it is dangerous. According to the Center for Disease Control (2007),
about 600 thousand to 1 million end up with needle stick injuries each year. This study is to evaluate the level of knowledge, attitude
and practice related to needle stick injury (NSIs) among Diploma in Nursing and Medical Assistant students, Faculty Health and Life
Science (FHLS), MSU. The study was a cross-sectional quantitative study to evaluate the prevalence level of knowledge, attitude and practice related to NSIs among students, FHLS, MSU. The self- administered questionnaire was adapted from the previous study done by Norsayani and Noor Hasim (2003). The level of
knowledge related to NSIs among health students from FHLS, MSU is high (M=67.31, SD=9.57) with a score 62.6%. Overall, the practice among students related to NSIs is still low (M= 2.36,
SD=.556) with the highest score at 4 (3.7%). This is because the senior students are already experienced and have been exposured to the practices in the clinical lab and hospital especially in giving injections, compared to semester 2 student. This is because they
are still new and their confidence level is still low. Therefore, the curriculum need to be revised at the Nursing Department level which covers the content of syllabus and learning strategy either in classroom and skill labs |
