Summary: | The purpose of this study was to identify the influence of School Resource Centre usage among teachers teaching form one to form three grade A secondary schools in Baling District of Kedah. Five secondary schools involved in this research.
It was hypothesized that teachers’ perceived usefulness of School Resource Centre, deterrents and frequency of use of School Resource Centre were related with gender, academic qualifications, teaching experience and media courses attended by teachers.
The research was conducted with a sample of 157 teachers teaching form one to form three from five grade A secondary schools in Baling district of Kedah. The required
data were collected through the use of Questionnaires. A total of 157 questionnaires were distributed to the subjects. The number of questionnaires returned and usable
were 110 (return rate of 70 percent).
The relationships between the teachers’ perceived usefulness of School Resource Centre as well as deterrents to the use of School Resource Centre and the frequency
of using School Resouce Centre with gender and academic qualifications were tested by the method of t-Test. Whereas the relationship between the teaching experience
and media courses attended by teachers with the usage of School Resource Centre were tested by the method of Pearson’s Product-Moment Correlation Coefficient.
The results showed that:
1) the rate of use of School Resource Centre by secondary school teachers were very low,
2) majority of teachers had a positive perception of the usefulness of School Resource Centre in teaching and learning process,
3) majority of the teachers perceived great deterrents to the use of School Resource Centre,
4) there was no significant relationship between gender and usage of School Resource Centre,
5) there was no significant relationship between academic qualifications with the usage of School Resource Centre,
6) there was a relationship between teaching experience with teacher perception towards the usage of School Resource Centre,
7) media courses attended by teachers did not influenced them to the use of School Resource Centre.
The major deterrents to the use of School Resource Centre by teachers could be identified as:
1) inadequate physical set up,
2) weaknesses in the management and organisation of media resources, and
3) lack of training.
In order to foster the use of School Resource Centre, it was suggested that positive steps be taken to reduce these constraints.
