Description
Summary:Teachers with lower workplace wellbeing had lower personal wellbeing and lower collective teacher efficacy. Ministry of Education is looking for a formula to improve collective teacher efficacy, the wellbeing of teachers and improve their working environment. In addition to factors such, collegiality is also an important element in achieving excellence and collective teacher efficacy. Research into the factors that contribute to collective teacher efficacy is very much needed in a developing country like Malaysia. Based on a social cognitive model, the study examined direct and indirect precursors of collective teacher efficacy. Specifically, it assessed the roles of personal wellbeing, collegiality, and workplace wellbeing in explaining collective teacher efficacy. A sample of 836 teachers was randomly selected from 12 Maktab Rendah Sains Mara in the east coast of Malaysia. Data were obtained through a survey questionnaire that comprised 85 items. Data were analysed using descriptive statistics, MANOVA analysis and Structural Equation Modelling. Results indicated that personal wellbeing, collegiality and workplace wellbeing are significant influences of collective teacher efficacy. Based on the holistic approach in model evaluation, the overall measurement model and the structural model were found to be adequately fit. The findings of the structural equation modelling indicate that workplace wellbeing partially mediated the relationship of personal wellbeing, collegiality and collective teacher efficacy. Compared to personal wellbeing, teacher collegiality seems to exhibit a stronger impact on collective teacher efficacy. This study has contributed to the development of the social cognitive theoretical framework by examining the relationship between personal wellbeing, collegiality, work place wellbeing and collective teacher efficacy. The study also provides firm support for the claims in social cognitive theory as the variables examined in the study were found to have an enormous influence on teachers' collective efficacy in Malaysia. The school management should review all the virtues associated with teachers such as personal wellbeing, workplace wellbeing, collegiality and collective efficacy of teachers in school so that teachers more efficiently carry out the tasks in school.
