| Summary: | The spread of fake news on social media is increasingly disturbing especially during the General Election (GE) season. Fake news related to GE on Facebook can cause public confuse in evaluating the legitimacy of an information. Furthermore, the spread of fake news negatively affects the political environment of Malaysia. Hence, this study aims to analyze the fake news regarding GE 14 on Facebook based on the following three objectives: (i) identify the fake news category of GE 14 on Facebook by framing; (ii) to study the tendency of fake news content of GE 14 on Facebook;
(iii) to examine the view of politicians on tendency of fake news content of GE 14 on Facebook. Two procedures of information gathering were used in this research methodology. Firstly, data are obtained through qualitative content analysis in sebenarnya.my website to achieve research objective one and two. Secondly, semistructured interviews were conducted among politicians to support the findings of content analysis and to achieve third research objective. The data were analyzed using thematic analysis with the assistance of NVivo application. The findings show that there are four categories of fake news regarding GE 14 on Facebook which are voters' issues, election management issues, security issues and policy issues. Next, the whole content of the fake news regarding GE 14 on Facebook has a tendency to current political disturbances, provocations in society and misunderstandings on the economic system. While, the politician's view on tendency of fake news content of GE 14 on Facebook consists of themes affecting voters, top leader, personal, racist, taxation, financial scandal and price of an item. This study gives a real picture to the voters, politicians and readers about the existence of fake news during GE of Malaysia on Facebook as well as the negative effects that will be faced. |
