Summary: | Communication is a main process in a class. It involves a teacher as the main actor, students and environment. Barriers in communication will lead to ineffective
communication process, which will subsequently affect the performance of a student in Mathematics. The variables from the aspect of a teacher used in this study were the
preparation of subject contents, its delivery, interaction and personality. From the aspect of a student, the variables included basic skills, inter and intra personal
communication whilst the environmental factor include the degree of comfort and classmates. This research is intended to identify the main communication barriers as
perceived by the students, communication barriers and demographic factor which were related to students' performance and also identifying the main teaching media used by teachers. Respondents for this research were 296 form four and five students from five schools in Bangsar Zone, Kuala Lumpur. The analysis comprised of descriptive
statistics, Pearson correlation, ANOVA and T-Test. The findings of the research depicted that the main communication barriers were preparation of subject contents, interaction, basic skills, inter and intra personal communication and degree of comfort. All these factors were positively related. Race in the demographic factor differs significantly with students' performance whilst sex does not influence students' performance. The main teaching media used were the blackboard or white board. |
