Description
Summary:The borderless world resulting from the emergence of the Internet has had a worrying effect especially on school students and adolescents. However, adolescents whose life journey is always under the monitoring and guidance of parents will form a strong identity. The use of social media by adolescents is formed from the education and upbringing of parents in a family. Peers, teachers and religious beliefs also influence the use of social media among adolescents. The Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) conducted earlier was also found not to take into account the factors that influence adolescents in using social media including parenting style, peers, teachers and religious beliefs. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to identify the level of use of social media among adolescents by focusing on variables of parenting style, peers, teachers and religious beliefs. This study uses a cross-sectional approach involving 313 secondary school students in the districts of Kota Setar and Kuala Muda, Kedah. Regression analysis was used to identify the factors influencing adolescents in using social media based on parenting style, peers, teachers, and religious beliefs. Overall, peers, teachers and religious beliefs was found to influence adolescents in the use of social media. Findings also show that the use of social media among adolescents is low. This can be seen based on the low value of Perceived Usefulness of Social Media (PU) and Perceived Ease of Use of Social Media (PEOU). As for the parenting style, it was found that parents are more likely to adopt a permissive parenting style. This parenting style was found to be related to other factors, namely the level of education, type of employment and income earned. The time factor shows that parents could not spend quality time for children because they need to allocate more time to earn a living and this in turn leads to neglect of children. Therefore, this study can provide comprehensive recommendations to policy makers, especially the National Population and Family Development Board (LPPKN) in designing programs and modules related to parenting skills. These identified factors can be used as a guide for policy makers or stakeholders to design a more comprehensive program and cover the scope of a teenager's life.
