Description
Summary:The Financial Crisis of 1997/98 occurred suddenly for Malaysia. The recovery process implemented by the government was quickly and successfully carried out due to the existence of policies generated by Malaysia's own management. Mahathirisation and clear management elements, backed by the strength of Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s leadership, revealed Malaysia's formula in dealing with the Financial Crisis of 1997/98, that is, through Mahathiriskonomism's approach. The measures to overcome the crisis were linked to the leadership style and idiosyncratic approach of Dr. Mahathir Mohamad known as Mahathiriskonomism. Thus, the general objective of this study was to study the methods and approaches used by Dr Mahathir Mohamad in resolving the economic and political crisis that had occurred. Specifically, this study was carried out, namely, to (1) identify measures and actions implemented by the Malaysian government in addressing the political-economic problems during the Financial Crisis of 1997/98, (2) analyze the steps and actions influenced by the leadership and idiosyncritics of Dr Mahathir Mohamad who had succeeded in restoring Malaysia's political-economic stability, and (3) identify strategies, measures and ideas as well as idiosyncratic elements of Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s leadership in dealing with the crisis. This study was conducted using qualitative methods with emphasis on historical approaches. Data were collected through secondary and primary methods. The government, led by Dr Mahathir, dealt with the economic downturn and implemented economic recovery with an approached known as Mahathiriskonomism, a model that proved to be successful in responding to the political and economic crisis during that time. The National Economic Recovery Plan (PPEN) was put into gear, proposing ideas and actions for the establishment of the National Economic Action Council (NEAC) as a crisis management center to reduce the gap between the government and the private sector, and building a framework of action. The role played by Dr Mahathir Mohamad in resolving the 1997/98 Financial Crisis through Mahathiriskonomism reflected a pattern of thinking and management, and leadership model in getting Malaysia out of the crisis that had plagued Malaysia’s political and economic system without the need for foreign assistance, including from the International Monetary Fund (IMF).
