Description
Summary:This qualitative study was carried out to explore the understanding of Form Four students about the concept of quadratic equations, to identify the errors made by students when solving quadratic equations and also to identify the reasons why the misconceptions about quadratic equations occurred among students. Ten students were selected through purposive sampling. Data of this study consisted of verbal information and non-verbal information which was collected through interviews and test-questions. The data was analyzed through transcription. The findings of the study showed that students have their own understanding about the concept of quadratic equations. The findings also suggested that students committed seven types or errors when they were solving quadratic equations, i.e. assuming there is only one answer, creating own rules, factorization, invalid cancellation, not writing the equation in the standard form, not putting factorization equals to 0 and basic algebraic operation. The study also suggests that the misconceptions in quadratic equations occur because of a few reasons, i.e. do not fully understand the concept of quadratic equations, do not understand the lesson taught in the classroom, create their own rules and poor understanding of basic algebraic concepts.
