Description
Summary:The vast contribution of Bahasa Melayu today has achieved the status of being multi purpose suitable for all situations and can adapt to changes according to occasions and requirements. We have to acknowledge the fact that Bahasa Melayu is the language of knowledge. Bahasa Melayu possesses the various forms which stresses the importance of scientific method. Morphology is one of the important studies in Bahasa Melayu. Hence, this study discusses the authenticity of the language corpus as the manifestation of the scientific method in describing the grammar of Bahasa Melayu. This study will analyze the data from the computerized corpus of Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka to observe and describe the actual usage of the negative bukan and tidak among todays society. Generally, the grammarians of Bahasa Melayu placed the negative bukan to negate the nominal phase and the prepositional phrase where as the negative tidak is being used to negate the verbal phrase and adjectival phrase. However, based on the data of computerized corpus, it is found that the negative word bukan not only negate the nominal phrase and the adjectival phrase. The same is also true of the negative word tidak. This study produces new finding which shows that the usage of the negative word by the society is suitable in the context of the sentence without affecting the meaning as intended. This new finding is different from the present applied grammar book that is the Tatabahasa Dewan.
