Description
Summary:On the basis of my own teaching experience and literature review, it was shown that many students were not able to master concepts of chemistry particularly in the topic of heat of combustion and they are less interested in this subject. Research findings also indicate that students rarely interact nor willing to assist friends during lesson. This research was conducted to determine the effectiveness of jigsaw cooperative teaching method on four dependent variables, namely (1) students understanding of concepts in chemistry particularly in the topic of heat of combustion; (2) interest in chemistry; (3) level of interaction during lesson; and (4) attitudes toward assisting friends during lesson. A total of 64 students from a school in Teluk Intan was used as research samples. Quasi experimental method using a teaching module regarding the said topic as the learning context was applied to students from the experimental group while the control group was subjected to conventional teaching method. Research instruments include pre-test, post-test and a five-point Likert scale questionnaire. Since there is a significant difference of the pre-test between groups, the dataset for the post-test was analyzed using Analysis of Covariance (ANCOVA). A series of ttests were conducted on students responses to the questionnaire to determine improvement on their interest in chemistry, level of interaction during lessons and attitudes toward assisting friends. Results of this study indicated that the mean score of post-test for the experimental group is significantly higher (F1,60 = 74.96, p <.001) than that of the control group. The experimental group also achieved a significantly higher mean score for the questionnaire regarding interest in chemistry (t = 11.52, p <.001), level of interaction between students (t = 10.08, p <.001) and attitudes toward assisting friends during lesson (t = 10.78, p <.001) as compared to the control group. Some implications from the findings were suggested and limitations were cited. Suggestions for further research on chemistry and other different subjects in different school environment are also put forward.
