Investigating the effects of multiple transmitters/receivers on free space optics link under tropical environment /

Multiple transmitters/receivers (TX/RX) are employed to mitigate the shortcomings of the Free Space Optics (FSO) communication link due to the atmospheric attenuations which has limited its link performances as well as its operational distance. Hence, with the current needs of this technology which...

Hence, with the current needs of this technology which require boosting the link capabilities beyond last miles solution, the qualitative analysis of the system has become essential. In this work, the FSO link performances in terms of received power, geometrical loss, link margin, bit error rate and Q-factor has been analyzed and evaluated using various numbers of TXs and RXs with and without atmospheric effect under tropical environment focusing on rain and scintillation phenomena (Malaysia's weather conditions). The methods used are theoretical, simulation and experimental analysis to provide a comprehensive study on the FSO link performances. The results show that the highest combination of TXs and RXs will produce higher gain of received power, enhance the Q-factor, reduce the geometrical loss and bit error rate as well as increase the link margin. In other words, the FSO technology can be improved and not be restricted as a last mile solution. The analysis presented will allow users, system designers and service providers to consider utilizing multiple TX/RX FSO technique to enhance the FSO link performances for longer distances.
