Mindfulness practices are introduced and exercised by people worldwide to reduce stress and obtain good mental health and wellbeing. The Western application of mindfulness practices is explicitly rooted in the Buddhist tradition. It adopted a secular approach by removing religious contexts and disregarding the spiritual need which is a major aspect required to improve one’s quality of life. For this reason, this study tries to enliven the application of mindfulness in Islamic tradition, which has already been practiced since a long time ago. The primary focus of this study is to examine the Western perspective of mindfulness in the light of Ibn al-Qayyim’s view in his Madarij al-Salikin through al-maqamat as demonstrated in his book: al-yaqaẓah, al-muhasabah, al-khushu’, al-muraqabah and al-iḥsan. The data for this study was collected using a qualitative research method. A literature study based on critical content analysis was employed, and inductive reasoning was adopted to analyse both perspectives. The findings demonstrate that mindfulness practices in Islam is related to the concept of taṣawwuf where the Muslims connect to Allah SWT in ‘ibadah. Three standards for Islamic mindfulness practice were developed based on al-maqamat of Ibn al-Qayyim. The findings assert that the Western mindfulness concept and practices rely heavily on the flawed concept of human nature, and thus, they are inappropriate to be practiced, especially by Muslims. Incorporating psychology and religious elements is necessary to ensure the satisfaction of all aspects of human life. Therefore, the Islamically integrated psychotherapy grounded in taṣawwuf has the purpose of fulfilling spiritual void while promoting a healthy lifestyle and increasing a person's confidence, hope, and meaning of life.
