Unlike public higher education institutions, private higher education institutions (PHEIs) are depending on the students as customers towards sustainability in such as a competitive industry. Although there is no financial support from Malaysian government, PHEIs that are supporting demand of higher education in the country are bound to the standard by Malaysian Qualification Accreditation (MQA) in order to equip the graduates with quality skills to support the government direction of knowledge-based economy. Looking at the significance contribution of the industry in the country, the issues faced by PHEIs requires serious attention from both of leaders and employees in the institution to remain competitive and sustainable. One of the issues in PHEIs that has been discussed in different studies almost every year is service quality. Despite of expensive different fees including student activity, resources, tuition, accommodation and examination, issue of service quality that causes student dissatisfaction has been mentioned as unable to meet the expectation of students as the customers. Autocratic and transformational styles of leadership are commonly practiced in the education industry in Malaysia. Present research focuses on authentic leadership improves service quality through employee self-efficacy in PHEIs. The main objective of present research was to solve the issue of service quality in PHEIs in Malaysia through authentic leadership with the practice of selfawareness, relational transparency, internalized moral perspective and balanced processing. These dimensions are independent variables, employee self-efficacy was the mediator and service quality in PHEIs as dependent variable. Respondents selected were employees included boundary and coordination tiers in PHEIs in Malaysia mainly located in the Klang Valley. Purposive sampling was selected for present study due to limited data on respondents and previous study on similar research area. Prior to data collection, pre-testing was carried out by questionnaire being sent to 30 respondents to ensure understanding on the questionnaire to achieve accurate outcome. According to G Power, sample size should be minimum 129, however, questionnaire was distributed to 300 respondents. There were 184 responses collected with 180 usable responses due to straight lining and missing values. The result of present study showed that there was no significant relationship between independent variables that were self-awareness, relational transparency, internalized moral perspective and balanced processing of authentic leadership and the mediator, employee self-efficacy. There was significant relationship between authentic leadership and employee self-efficacy and dependent variable that was service quality in PHEIs.
