It aims to find out the practicality of using the STADs as an instructional strategy to improve reading comprehension of learns in the English as a Second Language (ESL) classroom. As reading comprehension encompasses a wide array of sub skills, the researcher has limited the scope to include four relevant to the MUET (Malaysian University English Test) syllabus specification. 111 pre university learners of ESL participated in the study, and a pre test - post test control group quasi - experimental design was employed. 56 learners made up the experimental group to receive the STADs instructional strategy as opposed to 55 learners who receive the traditional classroom strategy of lectures ad open discussion. The Pre test and Post test being the main Instruments of research to collect data on the efficacy of instructional strategy was further supported by a preliminary questionnaire and classroom observations during the six weeks. The results indicated statistically significant differences between the Control and Experimental groups on the variable of Post test reading scores. The statistical difference favoured the Experimental group on the variable of reading proficiency scores. The researcher discusses pedagogical implications and suggests recommendations for further research. 2006 Thesis https://eprints.ums.edu.my/id/eprint/10181/ https://eprints.ums.edu.my/id/eprint/10181/1/mt0000000530.pdf text en public masters Universiti Malaysia Sabah School of Education and Social Development
